Wyrdskies
Return to previous page.
While the lands of Wyrdskies are known for its dragons and magic, this wasn't always the case. Dragons were mundane beasts and magic was mere fiction, but at some point in the very distant past, reality tore open and brought magic upon the world. It turned out dragons were particularly sensitive to it and rapidly evolved, taking on strange new forms and gaining the ability to wield many forms of magic. This project has over 30 dragons and many of them were created during Smaugust 2024, though at the moment most are unfinished because I needed some time to recover from 31 days of art.
Some terms which are used in this project (this list is not complete and will be finished later
- Draconida/Draconid/dragon - beasts which came from a six-finned, fish-like ancestor, commonly known as dragons.
- Enantiwyvernes/Sidewyvern - a branch of asymmetrical Tetradrakonids which are a sister group to Wyvernes. Like the flatfish they resemble, most live in the water, some live similarly to flatfish, while others live on the surface, using their dorsal wing in a similar manner to a ship's sail. A handful of species have adapted to land, their ventral wing becoming a thick, weight-bearing limb, while their dorsal wing becomes a grasping hand, another strange feature they have is that their hips have twisted around so that they may stand on both of their hind legs.
- Hexadraconida/Hexadraconid - six-limbed dragons, part of the branch of Draconida whose ancestors retained the fifth and sixth limbs. Some have less than six limbs.
- Pseudowyvern - Hexadraconids which developed a wyvern-like body structure. Basal species still retain their forelimbs in a reduced form, while more derived species fully lack them.
- Tetradrakonida/Tetradrakonid - four-limbed dragons, part of a branch of Draconida whose ancestors lost the fifth and sixth limbs early on, some prehistoric Tetradrakonids retain the extra limbs in a vestigial form, but no modern species exist. Some have less than four limbs.
- Wyvernes//Wyvernid/wyvern - a branch of Tetradrakonids which developed winged forelimbs. While not all winged Tetradrakonids are wyverns, they are the most common.
Notes
While I have not yet drawn what a terrestrial sidewyvern's skeleton looks like, I have visualized it and it unsurprisingly is a mess.
