Vrig are eyeless quadrupedal sophonts which are known for their incredible sense of taste and complex languages which are "spoken" through clattering their teeth. It can be tricky for other sophonts to learn to speak these languages—especially those who lack teeth or even mouths—but with practice and some modifications to the grammar, it can be done. They feed upon giant snails, using their tongue to track them down before crushing their shells with their molar-like teeth. As they spend a lot of time licking dangerous substances to "observe" their environment, they have developed an immunity to most toxins.

Initially, these mutants were not going to be sophont, instead being another domesticated species. I felt the idea of them being sophont was more interesting.
