The Steelhead Snapjaw

Return to previous page.

Steelhead Snapjaws are large dragons which live in mountainous environments, they gain their name from the armor-like carapace that completely covers their oversized head. They are incredibly territorial towards other large dragons, and are even known to attack small airships. Hatchling Snapjaws lack the orange highlights seen on fully grown individuals, the females only have orange on their wingtips and knuckle spikes, while males also have orange spots on their head armor and tail tip. They feed on large animals, including other dragons.

ART

the growth stages of an eyeless, quadrupedal, winged dragon, on the left is the adult, in the middle is the juvenile, and on the right is the egg. The adult's head is covered in a pale purple carapace, with jagged, tooth-like protrusions going down its length. Its front legs are short and thick, ending in two clawed toes, while its hind legs end in three. Its wings are broad and are supported by five fingers, as well as two spines that attach at the elbow, the knuckles on each wing have an orange spike on them. The tail is long and whip-like, and has a fin on either side at the base. The dragon's skin is mostly dark purple, the wing membranes are mostly a lighter purple, with yellow towards the edges of the inner wing. The tail fin has these same colors but has yellow edges on either side. The tips of the fingers and spines are the same orange as the knuckle spikes. The juvenile dragon mostly resembles a smaller, chubbier version of the adult, though it lacks orange on the wing-fingertips and does not have the knuckle spikes. The egg is oval and the markings on it make it look like it's wrapped in a dark purple cloth, the parts not covered by this 'cloth' are yellow and light purple.

Notes

I initially designed this dragon in one of my sketchbooks, I had been drawing the growth cycles for a hypothetical dragon breeding game (which eventually developed into Eolyth) and I believe this one was the third or fourth one I came up with. Unlike the other dragons of this project, the hatchling pose for this one never changed.
