Ravochthu, The Black Dragonslayer Fly

Return to previous page.

Ravochthu are the females of the Ochthu species, living exclusively on Drake's Isle where they prey upon massive, heavily armored monsters. They are nocturnal and take down their prey by sawing their head off with their proboscis. Their darkened carapace is rather thick, and their reflexes help protect them from being attacked. They are among the most intelligent monsters of this world, and some have even been tamed by the inhabitants of Drake's Isle.

Notes

This fly was heavily inspired by members of the genus Dohrniphora, as well as the genus Ochthera, the latter of which was also the inspiration for the name of the species.

The following text is what I wrote on its Cara post, I'll likely add a rewritten version of it later in the main text of this page.

"Drake's Isle was discovered many thousands of years ago by a seafaring people who were in search of a new place to live after their previous home was destroyed by an erupting volcano. They were swept off course during a storm and went further north than they intended to. This was when they discovered the island, previously uninhabited by humans. They went ashore and immediately began gathering materials to build shelters, so that they may have the time to recover from the journey

After a few weeks of living near the shore, they made the decision to travel further inland to see what the rest of this island had to offer. They saw many monsters that were not only new to them, but were entirely unknown to the rest of the world. The most notable of which was the massive, armored Drake which they called the Orthuun, they would hunt in groups of three and appeared to be the island's top predator, though they only hunted during the day and would retreat into rocky caves once the sun set.

All went relatively well for a while, until a loud screech interrupted the rainy night. Hunters went to investigate, and discovered the fresh corpse of a lone Orthuun, its head was missing entirely. Something must have picked it off before it could find shelter, but what?

The culprit was discovered some months later while it was in the act of taking down another Orthuun. It was a fly, grown to such a massive size that it could take down the largest predators living on this island. Its proboscis was serrated and lengthened, it used this to saw the heads off of other monsters. Fortunately, these flies do not consider humans to be prey, as they are far too small to be worth hunting.

The descendants of the people who discovered this island still live there, living alongside some of the most fascinating creatures found in the temperate world."
