I was originally going to wait for the game to release to make this article, but I felt that going over each of the monsters as they are revealed would be fun. There will be a bit of overlap between this article and my other one, but this article will be specifically for before the game's release, when there's much less information on each of the monsters. Once we know more about them after the game is released, that's when I'll transfer the ones I like most to the other article. I'll be starting with the small monsters first. There are a few monsters that have been revealed that I will not include just yet, as no renders currently exist to my knowledge, they are Baunos, Bulaqchi, Gaijos, and Talioth.
One other thing I will mention is that I love how vibrant the environments are, it is a significant improvement from World and Rise, so I probably won't set up ReShade for Wilds once I do get the game.
The Seikret appears to be a bird wyvern of some sort, it will have a similar role to the Canynes of Monster Hunter Rise. I quite like how colorful they are, and apparently there will be Seikret customization, which is always nice to hear. There will also be cosmetics and potentially armor for them as well, I am certainly curious about what sorts of outfits I'd be able to give it once I get the game in a couple years or so. Overall, I think they're pretty nice.
The Certatonoth are herbivorous monsters that are found in the Windward Plains, they look sorta like a combination between a Stegosaur and a pangolin, which is neat. Some Ceratonoth have spikes on their back that act as lightning rods during storms, which is pretty neat. I don't have much to say about them but they're pretty alright. (EDIT)Apparently the spiked individuals will be blackened when struck by Rey Dau's lightning.
Now this is more like it! I am very fond of mammalian creatures that stand like theropod dinosaurs, and these creatures are no exception. I love how "normal" they look compared to other monsters, they've got very pleasant designs. Other than living in the Windward Plains, we don't know much about them, but so far, I really like them!
While I do like the Lynian tribes that were introduced in MHWorld, at the moment I am much more fond of these little guys. They apparently live within the Scarlet Forest, having learned to live with it rapid flooding. We know very little about them, but they're pretty cute and I do like that they aren't yet another cat or masked goblin-thing, I am certainly curious about what sort of role they will play in the story and gameplay.
I like frogs and I like gorillas, so unsurprisingly I am fond of this monster. I wouldn't consider it my favorite Amphibian seen in Monster Hunter, but it's still pretty good. Apparently, they will be among the first monsters the player will be able to hunt, so they probable won't be too powerful, which is a bit disappointing but something's got to fill that role. Their saliva is very sticky, and they use it to stick stones to their forelimbs to alter their attacks in some way, I wouldn't be surprised if this can change the status effects it can inflict upon the player. I quite like them, but I'll have to fight one or see someone else fight one for me to fully develop my thoughts on them are. (EDIT)These are the tutorial monsters, and are unsurprisingly easy to fight, but it does a very good job of being a tutorial monster, wounds show up easily on its colorful skin, its weakspot is distinctive, and it's pretty fun to fight (at least with the Heavy Bowgun).
I've seen plenty of people call this monster ugly and I'll have to agree with that, though that is also exactly why I like it so much! This Fanged Beast feels ugly in a similar way to a bulldog or a warthog, which is something I think is really neat. That loose, wrinkly skin on its face makes a lot of sense for a monster that does a lot of fighting, if something tries to bite it in the face, it would only get a mouthful of skin instead of potentially damaging something such as an artery or an eye. While the Doshaguma is rather plain compared to most other monsters, I love how much it just seems like a normal animal in many ways. (EDIT)The Alpha Doshaguma is the second monster fought in the story and I find it to be pretty fun as well, the regular Doshaguma aren't quite as strong, but I still rather like them. Its attacks have a lot of weight behind them and will go berserk when it is near death, this will open up any destroyed wounds as well. It is most certainly deserving of the title "Fanged Beast"
Balahara is easily one of my favorite monsters in general based on its design. It is the first ever monster to have tripartite jaws, its scallop-like eyes are great, and it reminds me of a few species of Polychaete. They can spew globs of black mud and will construct sand traps like those of antlion larvae. All I can say is that it is an incredibly "me" monster and even though I don't know how it feels to fight, it is now among my top three favorite monsters (other two being Gigginox and Barlagual). I believe it's also the second ever Leviathan that burrows through sand, the other being Nibelsnarf. (EDIT)Of the monsters I have been able to fight, Balahara is easily my favorite. It uses its tail like a lance, launching itself backwards to try and stab the player. Its animations are fantastic as well, very fluid and serpentine.
Rey Dau is much closer to a traditional Monster Hunter monster, but is still an excellent Flying Wyvern. I love how vibrant it looks and how the gold and orange contrast against the black. Their horns are also articulate and can face directly forwards to pretty much act like a railgun. They are the apex monster of the Windward Plains, and I can certainly see why. It emanates power and I absolutely know I'll be using whatever kind of photo mode this game will have to get some great shots of this beast. (EDIT) Unfortunately I have not been able to fight Rey Dau properly in the beta, as it crashes after a few minutes of combat (presumably because of all the lightning), but I have enjoyed what little I have experienced. Its sound design is great and watching it fly through the storm is something to behold, even with medium settings. The wing-blades and tail can also become charged with electricity, gaining a rather beautiful blue glow.
While I was working on the alt text for this rather beautiful Temnoceran, I realized that its face is incredibly wasp-like. The shape of the mandibles, the compound eyes, the presence of three ocelli arranged in a triangle on its forehead. I was already fond of Lala Barina, but this discovery has significantly elevated my opinion of it. Like Nerscylla—one of the previous Temnocerans, it has a stinger that it can use to paralyze prey. The rose-like structure on its abdomen is also not always on display, it can be closed up and hidden by the white fur. We do not yet know the purpose of this structure, but it is rather fascinating.
I really like how pugnacious this Brute Wyvern looks, they are apparently known to fight smaller carnivores over carrion, I'm fond of aggressive scavengers so it's no surprise that I consider this monster to be my second favorite one to be revealed so far, at least at the time of writing this. They secrete a flammable substance which they set aflame with their tail, I'm not sure how it works (friction?) but it's certainly a neat idea. It's pretty cute too, if a third Monster Hunter Stories game comes out, I'd definitely have one on my side.
I really like how colorful Uth Duna is, it is also the third ever Leviathan to not be skinny, which I rather like (the other two are Nibelsnarf and Gobul). The membranes are not actually a part of its body, but are apparently made of water combined with its bodily fluids. I also like how fish-like its face is, sorta reminds me of a toothier arapaima. They are also the apex monster of the Scarlet Forest, and of the two revealed apexes, I currently prefer Uth Duna.
Arkveld is apparently the flagship monster of Wilds, and we don't actually know what it is categorized as! The whips on its wings are something that has been seen before in a trio of Flying Wyverns from Monster Hunter Frontier, though theirs were positioned differently. I am rather fond of Arkveld's nose shape too, though I'm not sure how I would describe it. They were thought to have been extinct, up until the player and their allies discover one, they aren't actually the first flagship that was thought to be extinct, Valstrax also bears this status. It is also known as the White Wraith, presumably because of its monochromatic coloration and extremely elusive nature. I'm not quite sure what I think of it yet, but I'm sure I'll have more of an opinion once we properly see it in action. (EDIT) Apparently it is capable of flight, so it turns out that fur is simply covering its wing membranes, so it probably is a Flying Wyvern, just not the type I was thinking of. (EDIT 2) Apparently it is classified as an "Extinct Species", so it does not have a traditional monster class at the moment, definitely curious about what their plans are with this monster.
I don't have too much to say about this monster, but it's definitely nice that we're getting a new monkey! It's very pretty as well, I love how all the colors go together. I feel like its design is a little busy for my tastes, but not in such a way that makes me dislike it. It also seems to be able to infuse itself with fire. We don't have too much information about these newly revealed monsters, but I am definitely interested in learning more about them.
For a while, Balahara was my favorite monster that has been revealed so far, but Rompopolo has somehow taken its place. I love how ugly and alien it looks, I also really enjoy that we're getting some smaller Brute Wyverns, as for a while, this class consisted almost entirely of massive monsters. Its myriad sacs are filled with poison gas. This monster is absolutely delightful, and I look forward to fighting it.
The Black Flame will be added here once it has been properly revealed with a name and render, but I am very excited that we are finally getting a new cephalopod monster after all these years, especially one which uses oil in place of ink.
