Droch

Return to previous page.

The Droch are quadrupedal sophonts which came from Vandir, much of their population still resides in the region. They are bulky and typically walk on their knuckles, though they can stand bipedally for short periods of time. Much of their skin is covered in thick scales, though even the uncovered parts of their body are incredibly tough. Droch are omnivorous and depending on the specific clan, cultural foods may contain mushrooms, roots, Druktal meat, and Roukra eggs. The Sekvada Clan is especially known for making use of the Kivekadi in a ceremonial meal known as the Vlakalast. The Kivekadi is a carnivorous fungus which has a mutualistic relationship with the Orudon tree — the tree provides it with nutrients and the fungus protects the tree from parasites by luring them onto with sweet-smelling secretions. Only a few Kivekadi are harvested per tree, the rest are left alone so that the tree is still protected. The Kivekadi are then cut up and mixed with water, fresh bones, roots, fish, and Rhekuva leaves in a cauldron, a fire is then lit beneath it and is served in the shells of Kosklati — large, beetle-like insects which are common in many parts of Vandir.

Droch have three sexes, known by the names of Vistri, Kurod, and Yastra. Vistri and Kurod can produce offspring with each other but not members of their own sex, the result is always a Yastra. Yastra can produce offspring with either Vistri and Kurod but not other Yastra, in turn the result is always that of the non-Yastra parent. Droch are also capable of changing sex, this requires they consume certain plants for a period of time to trigger the changes. Because of this, transgender humans often find acceptance among the Droch as such a concept is very familiar to them no matter where they come from. Several Droch don't fit cleanly into the Vistri, Kurod, and Yastra categories, making them intersex. While not all understand why this is the case, they are still accepted by other members of their society.

Notes

Like how the Arvog were originally orcs, the Droch were originally trolls. Once that change occurred, they were still relatively humanoid and for some time, were actually removed from Talveria as I found them to be too similar to the still orc-like Arvog. Once the Arvog became theropod-like marsupials and no longer had design overlap with the Droch, I brought them back.
