Dagvel

Return to previous page.

Dagvel are winged reptiles found in the temperate regions of southern Talveria, their brightly colored skin serves as a warning, as they bear venom in their fangs and tail barb. The venom injected through their fangs contains a paralytic agent and is primarily used for taking down prey, while their tail's venom causes extreme pain and is mainly used in self-defense. Dagvel prey upon small animals and are known to hunt small livestock at the beginning of the warmer months, so many see them as a nuisance. The reason for this was unknown for many years, but in the past several decades, it was discovered that their breeding season is responsible for this. Female Dagvel — which are almost twice the size of males and are better fliers — will engorge themselves on whatever prey they can find just as their breeding season starts, they will then congregate and wait for the males to arrive. Once at least one male is interested in her, she will fly for thirty-six days without stopping even to eat, living off of the reserves from the prey she ate. The males do not have such advantage and many will give up or even die from exhaustion or starvation, but only the males which followed her for the duration of this ritual and survived are allowed to mate with her. If successful, between three and five subadult Dagvel will hunt for prey so that they may feed the female and her half-dead mate.

Notes

The Dagvel was the very first creature I made for Talveria, though its original design was not a drawing, it took the form of a LEGO MOC I made out of the 31073 Creator set. This is also the origin of its color scheme (dark red, yellow, and black with green eyes and tail barb).
