The Crested Bellowsbreath

Return to previous page.

The Crested Bellowsbreath is a common, communal dragon that is typically found in tropical savannas and other hot biomes. Their nests lie within expansive burrows deep beneath the earth, most Bellowsbreaths reside within the center chamber, eggs are laid in smaller chambers closer to the surface. Adults and larvae feed on various species of insect, most commonly ants, bees, and termites. Adult dragons will use the organ on their tail to smoke out prey from their nests before lapping them up, and will use their claws to go after insects that are deeper inside, while larvae prefer to burrow into the nests themselves to feed on the insect's larvae. Their breath attack takes two forms, a short range flame plume, and a long range fire beam. Their voice is whistling and somewhat nasally.

a sheet depicting an orange dragon and its growth stages. The adult dragon has an angular, orange, bellows-like head with a smoke plume coming out of its mouth and a sharp crest on the back, while the neck is a darker red. It leads into an orange body with four legs and two wings, it also has a row of yellow spikes on its shoulders, wing knuckles, and thighs. Its front legs are wider at the lower arm and end in long, sharp claws, the hind legs are widest at the lower leg above the foot and also end in long, sharp claws. The wing membrane is mostly yellow with a blue marking in between each spine, the three largest blue markings are red in the center. The membrane ends midway down the tail, the tail ends in a dark, round reddish structure which is also ringed with yellow spikes, a tube extends from the tip and smoke is coming out of it. The dragon's larva is mostly a dark reddish purple in color, though it also has yellow splotches on its back and legs. The front three pairs of legs are small, nubby, and held off the ground, while the back five pairs are firmly planted and are much wider. Its facial shield is tube-shaped and has a pair of yellow eyes, a smoke plume is coming out from the end. The egg is sharp at the tip and is dark red on the edges and a bright white in the center, giving it the appearance of being very hot. To the left of the dragon is a side profile of the dragon's head with its tongue out, it is long and dark blue. Just below it is a frontal view of the dragon's head. On the lower right corner are two sketches of the dragon breathing fire, the first one is labeled 'Fire breath (short range)' and depicts it breathing a basic plume of fire, the second one is labeled 'Fire beam (long range)' and depicts it firing a beam of flame. On the upper right corner are three sketches labeled 'Diet', they are a cartoon hunk of meat, a leaf, and an apple.

Notes

This dragon was of course based off of a bellows, I thought it would be a neat look for a dragon. I have since changed the diet of this creature, formerly they fed on the ashes of whatever they could burn but I felt that didn't really fit the concept, but since I already designed it with a long narrow tongue and long claws, they eat bugs now. The thought process behind the smoker organ on the tail was that I wanted it to look like something that would contract and release smoke and was actually somewhat inspired by the pipette, once I finished this dragon and had shown it to some online friends, I realized it looked like a bong.
